Does there really need to be an occasion to shop? “That looks like something my sister would love” means it is going home with me, saved for a special day. Poking around antique stores always yields something interesting. If it comes from one of the antique or specialty shops in Rabun County in the Northeast Georgia Mountains that is especially true. Talking to shop owners is an adventure by itself. They are passionate about their stores and their communities and are willing to share all kinds of insider information.
In towns across Rabun County like Clayton, Dillard, and Lakemont talented artisans and craftspeople display their works in galleries and specialty shops. Timpson Creek Gallery and Black Bear Creek Antiques have an eclectic mix of hand made, new, and antique items. You can also find an array of one of a kind items on main street in downtown Clayton. If antiques are your ‘shops of choice’ you do not want to miss the many stores in Dillard up in the north end of the county. Everywhere you turn in our piece of the Northeast Georgia Mountains you will find something special that you will ‘have to take home with you’.
We are always awed by what imagination and hands can create from yarn, cloth, paint or even nature’s bounty. Artisans abound around the county. The North Georgia Arts Guild have over 100 members that create masterpieces small and large and are displayed in shops across the county.
Many of the beautiful lodges, inns, and museums sprinkled throughout the mountains have gift shops, mostly filled with locally made crafts and foods including cornmeal and grits from nearby grist mills. We are blessed to have two of these mills here in our corner of Georgia; Barker’s Creek Grist Mill at the historic artist residency and gallery of the Hambidge Center and Sylvan Falls Mill. Now that’s a local delicacy I truly want to take home and enjoy!
