Nestled in the southern tip of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains in Northeast Georgia, Rabun County GA is a convenient drive from the major metro areas of Atlanta, Asheville, Greenville and Chattanooga, and is a convenient hub for day trips to other nearby places and attractions in the Northeast Georgia Mountains and Western North Carolina.
The Eastern Continental Divide runs through Rabun County, defining its geographic character. Rabun County is bounded on the west by the mountain ridges of the Appalachian Trail and on the east by the Chattooga River. The Tallulah River, which flows through Lakes Burton, Seed, Rabun, and Tallulah Falls Lake to join the Tugaloo River, forms a central pass through the mountains. The mountain towns and communities of Rabun County align along a corridor known as the “Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains.”
Rabun County is home to four municipalities which provide local government services. The City of Clayton is Rabun County seat and the principal city in the county. Tallulah Falls is home to the Tallulah Gorge which is a magnificent natural feature providing all kinds of outdoor excitement like rock climbing! The City of Dillard sits just south of the state border shared with North Carolina and is part of the corridor called the Gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. Sky Valley originated in 1969 as the southernmost ski resort community in the US. There’s also a hospital, the Rabun County Chamber of Commerce for local business and the quaint Town of Tiger to visit.
Many local media organizations help to provide information and news to county residents. The Clayton Tribune began operating in 1897 and in the very early days was sometimes printed on a simple hand press on wrapping paper borrowed from local store owners. Georgia Mountain Laurel magazine is a free publication that features mountain home and living news, stories and articles. Sky 104 is the local radio station featuring Adult Contemporary music and local news, weather and sports.
